It seems like once again I have become prematurely overexcited by an encouraging government policy that isn’t quite what I had hoped for when you look at the details. This time it is in respect of the opening up of land registry data, largely as the result of unrelenting campaigning work by Guy Shrubsole: https://lnkd.in/eQzCcfcy Guy’s wheelhouse is access and equity in the countryside, so chapeau, but as he confirmed to me: "The exact scope hasn't been set out yet by the government, but I suspect it will still be harder to get info on town centres, simply because the government has said they (very understandably) want to exclude most homeowners. To do this, I suspect they will be screening out small land parcels, which may take out quite a few urban land parcels. However, land that's owned by corporate or public sector bodies is already published, for all sizes of land parcel, but just remains separated from INSPIRE IDs/ maps. I've been pushing for this spatial link to be restored in future too. So it should become easier to map the corporate and public sector owners of town centres, for sure." With respect to homeowners, the information is there for £4, so it’s not a privacy issue, so I personally don’t get this qualification. I know from the excellent work that Platform Places does that free, unfettered access to land ownership in town centres would massively enhance their work. I expect Community Land Trust, Power to Change, Architectural Heritage Foundation, Footwork and others would agree? Knowing who is responsible for “villainous vacancy” (TM – me just now!) would certainly help Polly Mackenzie's “Troubled Buildings Programme” We still don’t really know who owns the High Street, and too many experts, government ministers and even the SoS recently on Times Radio (I am a fan and availble to chat about this) repeat the mantra that it is “foreign-owned hedge funds” keeping properties vacant, which is errant “balderdash”. Decisions haven’t been made, some MP’s are interested. I recently spoke to Patrick Hurley about this, for example. Is there enough interest in making further representations to make sure that we have transparency and better policy on our High Streets, too?
