$520 Million for Humanoid Robots - When VCs Bet the Next AI Breakthrough Will Walk Into Factories Apptronik raised $520 million at a $5-5.5 billion valuation to scale production of humanoid robot Apollo, bringing total capital raised to nearly $1 billion in one year. For VCs watching the humanoid robotics market - Goldman Sachs projects $38 billion by 2035 from near-zero today, Citi forecasts $209 billion by 2035 growing to $7 trillion by 2050 - this represents how embodied AI is emerging as high-conviction deep-tech where foundation models, computer vision, and reinforcement learning enable systems that perceive, reason, and act in the physical world. Founded in 2016 by Jeff Cardenas (CEO), Nicholas Paine (CTO), Bill Helmsing, and Luis Sentis from UT Austin's Human Centered Robotics Lab, Apptronik builds general-purpose humanoid platforms for human-built environments. Apollo, the ninth-generation robot, lifts 55 pounds, operates for 4 hours per battery, and performs inventory movement, material handling, and assembly without requiring infrastructure redesign. The capital pool demonstrates strategic conviction: B Capital and Capital Factory led a $350M Series A round (February 2025), with Mercedes-Benz AG and ARK Investment Management LLC adding $53M (March 2025). This February's $520M extension brought Google, Mercedes-Benz AG, B Capital, AT&T Ventures, John Deere, Qatar Investment Authority, and PEAK6, with Howard Morgan (B Capital founding partner) joining Apptronik's board. Strategic partnerships matter: Google DeepMind integrated Gemini Robotics' 1.5 models, while NVIDIA's Project GR00T runs on the Jetson AGX Orin. Apollo is deployed at Mercedes-Benz AG factories, GXO Logistics warehouses, and Jabil manufacturing - collecting real-world data while competitors remain in development. The company employs 300, plans to make 200+ hires, and targets $1B in orders starting in 2027, with an average leasing rate of $80K/year. The economics: global manufacturing represents $16.83 trillion annually amid persistent labor shortages. Apollo's platform approach - "one robot for thousands of tasks" - lets us keep improving by using simulation and deployment data. Congratulations to Jeff Cardenas, Nicholas Paine, Bill Helmsing, Luis Sentis, and the Apptronik team. Recognition to Howard Morgan, B Capital, Capital Factory, Google, Mercedes-Benz AG, ARK Investment Management LLC, AT&T Ventures, John Deere, Qatar Investment Authority, and PEAK6.
